GM Gold medal winner

Congratulations to these Great Breweries and Beers

Michigan-grown and processed chestnut chips, which were first discovered in a laboratory at Michigan State University with Chestnut Growers, Inc., have been used in the brewing of three gold medal award-winning beers and helped produce a nation’s seasonal favorite ale.

Gold medal—Best of Craft Beer Awards (International competition; Bend, OR), 2016,:  Chestnut Head
This American porter is brewed by Roak in Royal Oak, Michigan using Michigan-grown chestnuts and Michigan maple syrup. In its third year now, Chestnut Head took the best craft Porter gold medal.  Bottled, it is distributed across Michigan and can be found in beer and party stores. Overall, the beer has received a rating of 3.63 on Untappd and a Beer Advocate rating of 4.02 (Exceptional). The 2017 version is very good and receiving great scores.

Gold medal—Great American Beer Festival (Denver, CO), 2010, Specialty Beer:  Golden Manatee Belipago
A gold medal award winning gluten-free beer?  This Belgian-style IPA, brewed by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales includes Michigan chestnuts, tapioca, sorghum, agave nectar and hops.  Legendary Brewer Ron Jeffries stated that with the Belipago, he created a beer that could be enjoyed by everybody, not just gluten-intolerant people. The most satisfying part of winning gold was that his beer competed against beers made with traditional malted barley.  A gluten-free beer with an Untappd rating of 3.36, better than most non-gluten-free ales rated.  It has a Beer Advocate rating of 3.6 (Good).  A good gluten-free beer finally.

Gold medal—Australian International Beer Awards, 2010: Special Holiday Ale
This collaboration ale by Jolly Pumpkin, Nøgne-Ø, and Stone Brewery was brewed with ingredients indigenous to the area where each brewery is located. We are proud that it contained Michigan chestnuts, Norwegian juniper berries, and white sage from Southern California. It was voted Norway’s favorite holiday ale.
